Hoosic River Shoreline Survey. In the summer of 2012, the summer interns for the Hoosic River Watershed Association conducted Shoreline Surveys along the Hoosic River. The river was broken down into various sections based on characteristic changes in the stream and riparian habitat. The surveys identified human impacts on the river that require immediate attention for the health of the river. They also provide a documentation of other human impacts, like outflow and drainage pipes, and natural qualities for reference in the future.
Hoosic Report for 2011This report summarizes the 2011 stream biomonitoring results from nine locations and provides a brief comparison of these results to previous studies. The overall water quality of the Hoosic River, based on stream insect communities, is slightly impacted. Comparative analysis to previous NYS DEC data shows that water quality has not changed appreciably since 1997. The most likely sources of impact are nonpoint source nutrient and organic inputs.
Hoosic 2010 The overall water quality of the Hoosic River, based on stream insect communities, indicated slightly impacted conditions; comparison with historical MA DEP and NYS DEC data suggest water quality conditions have not changed appreciably since 1997.
Hoosic_2009
Reports the results from sampling benthic macroinvertebrates at 6 locations, one in Vermont and five in Massachusetts.
2008 report for the Hoosic in Vermont – Discusses the results from benthic macroinvertebrate sampling of 8 tributary streams, 2 in the Pownal area connecting with the main Hoosic and 6 in the Bennington region connecting with the Walloomsac.
2007 Hoosic Report – Provides the results from a follow-up water quality survey in the vicinity of Hoosick Falls, New York.
2006 Hoosic River report – Discusses the results from sampling benthic macroinvertebrates at 13 locations starting in Adams, Ma., continuing downstream through Pownal, VT., and ending near Valley Falls, NY.
2005 Benthic Macroinvertebrates in the Little Hoosic – Provides the results from 4 segments of the Little Hoosic River in New York. Includes water temperature data from one location recorded hourly during the summer.
Conditions in the New York and Vermont portions Hoosic River in 2004 – Water quality samples were collected once each month from May through September at 11 locations, 7 on the main stem, 3 on the Little Hoosic, and 1 on the Walloomsac. Overall, the bacteria levels were above, or well above, desirable levels for primary contact recreation such as swimming and wading. The other water quality parameters were below or within the appropriate limits, with a few minor exceptions.
How tributaries contribute to the health and vitality of the Hoosic River – Discusses the results of sampling for several physical and chemical variables at 9 locations within the Hoosic River between Cheshire Lake and Adams and including several tributaries. Also includes data from temperature samples and benthic macroinvertebrate samples and describes how the tributaries alter the conditions in the main river.
Stream temperatures in the Green River and Hemlock Brook in 2003 – Provides data from 14 locations along these two tributaries of the Hoosic River in Massachusetts.
Water quality of the Massachusetts portion of the Hoosic in 2002 – Includes results from 20 sites for bacteria and for several chemical and physical variables. Sites are located on Cheshire Lake and the South Branch, the North Branch, Green River, Hemlock Brook, and Christmas Brook.
How Clean is the Green?
Part I – Reports the results from 2001 monitoring of the Green River near the Water St. Mill in Williamstown and Christmas Brook. The Green River is a major tributary of the Hoosic River in Massachusetts. Variables measured were dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, nitrate nitrogen, orthophosphates, temperature, and turbidity.
Part II – Reports the results from 2001 monitoring for bacteria (fecal coliform) in the Green River, a major tributary of the Hoosic River in Massachusetts. Sixteen sites were sampled from Old Mill Rd. in south Williamstown downstream to the Route 2 bridge in Williamstown.
2001 Monitoring the Hoosic: North Branch and Main Stem – Reports the results from 2001 monitoring for bacteria (fecal coliform) in the main stem of the Hoosic and in the North Branch, a major tributary. Eight sites were sampled on the main stem, starting at Farnams Causeway between the middle and north basins of Cheshire Lake and continuing downstream to the USGS flow gauge at the downstream end of the flood control structures in North Adams. Also, eight sites were sampled on the North Branch starting at the Bridge at the Lane in Stamford, Vt. and continuing downstream to Marshall St. in North Adams.
2000 and Earlier: HooRWA Reports – This Word document lists and describes various HooRWA water quality studies. Copies are available on request.
