Remediation Projects

What HooRWA does.
Besides riverbank cleanups, HooRWA identifies other areas of concern along the river. We do not fund or conduct large-scale remediation ourselves, but can help landowners and townships seek technical assistance or funding.

What you can do.
Bring unknown dump sites to our attention.
Volunteer on river cleanup days.

What others are doing.

The Massachusetts Division of Ecological Resources  recently produced  Dam Removal in Pittsfield: Different Reasons, One Goal, a five-minute YouTube video about the upcoming removal of the Tel-Electric Dam on the West Branch of the Housatonic River in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The video features City staff, the dam owners, and local partners. Together they make the case that the dam removal will restore river health, improve public safety, and build community resilience in Pittsfield.  HooRWA believes this project represents a good example of the typical ecological values of dam removal for unused (power generating) aging dams. Paddling between North Adams and Pownal is usuallly safest when the Williamstown gauge reads 200cfs - 700cfs.
